Chronic Pain is Often Treatable without Surgery or Drugs

Headaches and migraines are incredibly common among Americans.  In fact, a study published in 2018 states that 15 – 20% of American adults suffer from chronic headaches and migraines.  The bigger problem, however, is that there are no cures for migraines, and often the prescription medication that is supposed to help stave off the pain, comes with a slew of negative side effects.

There is, however, an alternative that may work a lot better than popping pills or undergoing surgery.  Regular chiropractic adjustments can help reduce, and sometimes eliminate, the frequency of chronic headaches and migraines.

Headaches and Migraines Come with Neck Pain

Signs and symptoms of migraines vary largely.  The causes are somewhat unknown, but a study published in 2019 showed that over 75% of those who suffer from migraines also have significant neck pain.  While correlation does not imply causation, it’s worth addressing that the neck pain may be the root of the headaches and migraines.  If nothing else, relieving this pain in the neck will allow the body to more effectively manage whatever else is going on in the head.

How a Chiropractor Helps with Migraines and Headaches

Migraines and headaches have multiple triggers.  Many of them can be helped with regular chiropractic adjustments.

  • Stress – Stress is a huge source of many different physical ailments. What starts out as psychological, ends up with physical symptoms.  We know that regular adjustments can improve your mental well-being, and that includes helping to reduce the amount of stress you are under.  Being adjusted certainly won’t eliminate that deadline, but it will reduce the pain you’re in so you can focus more clearly on what’s necessary.
  • Sleep – So many adults don’t get enough sleep. The problem is that we often do it to ourselves – poor time management means we’re staying up late, and rising early.  But pain in the joints can also lead to poor sleep.  That pain can often be reduced or eliminated pretty easily with adjustments, ultimately leading to better sleep.
  • Joint Alignment – When your neck joints aren’t in the right place, your body compensates. Prolonged compensation means your muscles are strained, tendons aren’t working the right way, and ultimately a headache can be the result.  Ensuring back and neck is aligned, can significantly reduce pain in many other areas of the body.

A chiropractor can’t treat the migraine or headache itself, but we can determine where the body isn’t functioning optimally, and reduce the strain in those areas.  When everything is working as it should, the body can focus on eliminating the headaches and migraines on its own.

Should You See Dr. Shayne Durbin, Chiropractor in Billings?

So, if you’re suffering from chronic headaches and migraines, should you see a local chiropractor?

The answer is, YES!  And we don’t just say that so you come in and become a patient.  We say that because chiropractic care is non-invasive and complementary.  This means you don’t have to give up your regular treatments (if you take prescription medications or have other treatments going on).  It means the chiropractic care works alongside the other treatments – ultimately making you feel better than ever.
