As You Age, You Can Stay Mobile
Growing older means that the body starts to wear out. That doesn’t mean, however, that you have to lose your independence. If you stay healthy and active, the independence can stick with you long into your golden years.
One of the great ways to stay healthy is to ensure that your joints are staying in shape, and regular visits to your chiropractor ensures that things are functioning optimally.
Why Mobility as You Age Matters
This one is pretty obvious – mobility is a key factor to maintaining your independence. Moving freely means that you get to keep doing what you love: whether that’s gardening, traveling, biking, or just making your way down the halls at the retirement home so you can play cards with your friends.
A chiropractor helps with this in two big ways.
First, you won’t be quite so stiff. Aging muscles and joints get a bit stiffer, and can end up limiting our range of motion. Adjustments keep that stiffness at bay.
In addition to that range of motion, regular adjustments help to keep you flexible. Any movement, especially bending, twisting, and reaching, require you to be flexible – get those daily tasks done because you’re flexible enough.
Skip the Pain Meds
Our aging bodies start to ache. Chronic pain affects as many as 65% of older adults in the USA. And the American way is to reach for the pain pills; whether they’re prescription or over-the-counter.
Chiropractic care offers a drug-free approach to pain management. By addressing the root cause of the pain (usually misaligned joints) the adjustments can help alleviate the pain naturally, without the need for those meds.
By reducing the reliance on painkillers, older adults aren’t as dependent on medication to ensure they can get through the day. This reduces risks of addiction, digestive issues, cognitive impairment, and the fact that over time those pills might not work quite as well as they used to.
Stay on Your Feet – Preventing Falls
The leading cause of injury among older adults: falls. Often, they can result in life-threatening injuries, and the time to recover means a significant loss of independence.
By ensuring the nervous system is working properly, your balance in improved. Proper spinal alignment helps to enhance the communication between the brain and the rest of the body.
Those alignments help in other ways too. Reducing the pain in the body means the muscles are less likely to give out. By exercising those core muscles, you can help maintain your balance because you’re strong enough to do so.
Activity and Social Engagements
When you’re unable to move properly, it’s hard to get out there and socialize. When you’re visiting your local chiropractor regularly, that means you’re in a better condition to move around normally and attend those social events.
This can have great benefits for mental health. Isolation can be draining and deteriorate the brain. However, ensuring lack of mobility isn’t an issue, there are no excuses to not get out there and have some fun with your friends.
