Recovering from Surgery is Smoother with Chiropractor Visits
There are some times when you just can’t avoid having surgery. Often, joint issues and their related problems can be corrected with chiropractic care. However, there are times when there is physical damage to the body, or something that goes beyond what a chiropractor can do, and you have to go under the knife.
In these instances, you can still get help with the recovery process by visiting your local chiropractor.
How Long do I Have to Wait Before Seeing a Chiropractor
Wait time all depends on what surgery was performed. If you had back surgery, where the spine was worked on, you will need to wait at least six weeks before coming in for an adjustment. However, if your surgery was on your hand, or your foot (or even elbows or knees) you might be able to come in much sooner.
Talk it over with your doctor, as they may even recommend chiropractic visits to help ensure the healing process goes smoothly.
What Does a Chiropractor Help with After Surgery?
There are a number of benefits to visiting your Billings chiropractor. Just like you get adjusted pre-surgery, many of those same benefits come when you’re rehabbing after surgery.
Pain Management – Pain management is one of the primary goals for visiting your chiropractor after surgery. Pain, however, isn’t always directly related to the surgery itself.
A patient recently had surgery on his knee. After a couple of weeks, he weened off the pain killers, and started having headaches. During his adjustment, his neck was very misaligned, and we determined that while on the operating table, it had become kinked. The pain killers were masking the pain, and he didn’t even realize it wasn’t in place. It wasn’t long after his adjustment that the headaches cleared up.
Improved Blood Flow – When your joints are in line, your body can operate optimally. That means your blood flow and nervous system will be doing their jobs unencumbered. One of the fastest ways to heal is to make sure that the entire body has blood flow and receiving plenty of oxygen – your chiropractic adjustments make that happen.
Restore Mobility – If your surgery was on a joint, you want to make sure you can move just as well as before the surgery. As the body heals, things can get tightened up. Restoring that movement through adjustments makes sure muscles and ligaments heal properly, and not in an overly tight manner.
Collagen Breakdown – Your body uses collagen to build skin, muscles, and other tissues – so why are we breaking it down? When you have scar tissue, the collage will build up and create an adhesion. This is where it’s building tissue that isn’t supposed to be there. By breaking down that scar tissue, the body heals with a fuller range of motion.
